How a smart geyser works

If you've ever wondered how a smart geyser manages to help you reduce your electricity consumption while at the same time giving you an advance warning of faults, this infographic will help you to see how the device connects to the various elements of your geyser.

Smart technology – where devices are managed from an app on a smartphone – has given homeowners opportunities to take control of their homes in new and more convenient ways. And in the case of geysers, which are often difficult to access, assess and adjust, smart technology has been particularly impactful.

Taking back control of your geyser and water heating costs doesn’t require expensive replacement of your geyser either. In fact, a smart geyser device can be retrofitted to any electric geyser that has been installed within the ceiling.

But how does a smart geyser device do this?

  1. Switch: The smart geyser device sits between your geyser and the geyser isolator switch on your main electrical board. This means that power to the geyser can be shut off by the device for implementation of money-saving heating schedules or if a fault is detected. The device also enables you to switch your geyser on and off remotely, which is particularly handy when you’re away.
  1. Smart controller: The smart controller box is the brains of the operations, controlling power supply to the geyser, managing temperature and monitoring the feedback from the sensors for any faults. The operations use algorithms to identify serious faults and send notifications to the app as well as cut off water and electricity supply to the geyser to prevent damage to the home.
  1. Element: The geyser element is directly wired to the controller box, enabling the management of temperature control and heating schedules.
  1. Sensors: A variety of sensors are used to monitor the operation and health of the geyser. Depending on the smart geyser option you choose, these could include sensors for internal and external temperature, thermostat and drip tray.
  1. Control valve: While an automated control valve is not always offered as part of a smart geyser installation, this is definitely a feature worth having. The control valve enables your smart geyser device to cut the water supply to the geyser, limiting damage to the home and contents if a serious fault, such as a burst geyser, occurs.
