Cut your electricity bill by as much as 40% when you convert your existing electric geyser to get free sun power from solar panels.
Tired of high electricity bills hurting your budget? PowerOptimal’s Elon 100 helps you take full advantage of free power from the sun by converting your existing electric geyser to get electricity from normal solar panels.
The medium-size Elon 100 solution is perfect for households with 4 to 5 people and can provide up to 70% of your household’s hot water needs in the case of 4 people or up to 55% in the case of 5 people.
When combined with a LookSee Solar Loan, the Elon 100 pays for itself from day 1, with an estimated savings of R708* per month exceeding the loan repayments of R664 per month. This effectively means that you’ll be getting this conversion for free!
Also, when you factor in annual electricity tariff hikes, your savings could increase to as much as R85,000 over 10 years on a Solar Loan*.
Alternatively, if you decide to pay for it in cash, you can expect the system to pay for itself over 3 to 5 years and given the long lifespan of the solar panels you’ll enjoy free water heating for many years to come.
In this case, the expected savings are as much as R101,000 over 10 years.
*Calculation notes:
- Monthly payment based on an Energy loan with an interest rate of prime + 4.5%, paid over 72 months
- 1 shower per person per day with each shower consuming 96lts of water at 40C, and using post-paid electricity rates for a home with an average consumption (900kWh per month) in the City of Johannesburg.
- Municipal electricity rates increase by 12.7% p.a. in the first year, with the rate of increase diminishing yearly down to 6.5% p.a. in year 10
- For savings in Durban and Cape Town, please talk to our Customer Care consultants.
- Save up to 40% on your electricity bill by heating your geyser with the power of the sun
- Pays for itself in just under 3 years on average
- No need to schedule your geyser heating due to loadshedding
- Easily switch to mains power during extended periods of stormy weather
- Compatible with 99% of standard electric geysers
- Minimal maintenance required
- Solar panels are installed on your roof and connected to the Elon 100 controller.
- A connection to your home’s main electricty supply is also added to the Elon 100 controller for backup power.
- The controller is then connected to your existing electric geyser’s element and thermostat.
- An end-user device is installed at a convenient place in your home to allow you to control when your geyser uses power from the sun or the grid.

Find out how much solar power you could generate from your roof

Our low interest rates ranging from Prime to a maximum of 6.5%.
The system uses a technology that allows direct current from solar PV panels to power a geyser. The system also allows the user to switch from solar power to mains electricity usage if there are prolonged periods of overcast weather, or if there are more people in the home than normal.
The Elon 100 comes with an easy to use end-user controller device with different settings which allow you to select how much power your geyser draws from your solar panels and the grid.
PV stands for photovoltaic and describes the conversion of light into electricity using semiconducting materials in solar modules or panels. Simply put, solar PV panels are what you would see in a normal home solar power installation and convert the light from the sun to electricity.
Please note that Solar PV technology differs from traditional solar geyser technologies such as evacuated tubes or flat plates.
The solar panels we use generally last at least 25 to 30 years.
The acronym “kWp” stands for the peak kilowatt. This is the maximum amount of electricity that the panels can produce.
According to PowerOptimal, the number of solar panels required is determined by the number of people in the household and their hot water usage. For instance, the medium conversion process will satisfy up to 70% of the hot water needs of a 4-person household.
No, the Elon 100 can only be installed on a geyser that is positioned inside the roof of the property.
Yes you can, as the Elon 100 kit converts the power from the PV panels. The conversion also comes with a user device which allows you to control how much power it must draw from the solar panels and your home’s main electricity supply.
No, the Elon 100 requires dedicated solar panels and cannot be added to an existing solar installation.
It is recommended that solar panels be cleaned at least every 6 months to ensure they generate power from the sun efficiently. You should also check that surrounding tree growth is not casting shadows on the panels. If so, then these trees should be trimmed.
When the geyser connected to the Elon 100 needs to be replaced, the plumber simply needs to disconnect the Elon 100’s electric wiring from the geyser’s heating element and thermostat and remove/retrieve the element adapter. Once the geyser has been replaced, the plumber needs to reconnect the Elon 100 wiring and element adapter to the new geyser’s element and thermostat.
There is a QR code on the Elon 100 main unit as well that plumbers can scan to go to the PowerOptimal Installation Manual download page with further instructions, should this be required.
