ThermoTank water heat pump

The 200 litre ThermoTank hot water heat pump system from Magneto only consumes 750 watts of electricty and was specifically designed so that it can be used in conjunction with your solar PV installation.

Thermo Tank Product Details

How does it work?

The ThermoTank is a thermal low pressure integrated heat exchange system which is designed to reduce electricity consumption by harnessing ambient heat in the atmosphere and transferring this heat to the water stored in the insulated water tank.

The low pressure insulated water tank acts as a hot water battery that stores water at 60° Celsius. This water remains in the tank to heat water that is passed through the system.

The high pressure water supplied by the water mains, enters the hot water tank through a heating coil placed inside the stored hot water and this is where the heat exchange takes place. By the time the water exits the heating coil it is up to temperature.

The heat pump monitors the temperature of the water inside the water storage tank and regulates it to maintain the pre-determined temperature.

  •
  • Only uses 750W of power.
  • Has a 2 kW backup element in case the water temperature needs boosting

What's excluded

The Magneto Thermo tank has to be installed on a perfectly level surface area for normal operation.

Magneto does provide the following add-on products:

  • Adjustable powder coated steel plinth to provide a stable platform for the tank to stand on, where this may be required
  • Deflector ducting for inlet and exhaust ports, where this might be needed

NOTE: A site inpection is conducted and if the above is required, this will be added to the quote.

Frequently asked questions

  • Benefits
  • Installation
  • Maintenance
How much electricity will I save?
The ThermoTank offers savings of up to 53% saving in winter and 68% in summer. It only uses 750 watts of electricity, compared to the 4 000 watts typically consumed by a conventional 200L geyser.
Can I run it off my solar installation?
Yes, but this solution is not recommended for inverters smaller than 3kW.
Does the ThermoTank have a maximum temperature setting like an electric geyser?
Yes, the ThermoTank can heat up to 60°C in heat pump mode only, and up to 70°C in mixed or element mode.
When is the 2kW heating element used?
The backup heating element activates if the tank temperature drops below 35°C and, quickly heats the water up to 60°C.
Does it work in cold weather?
Yes, the heat pump can operate in temperatures ranging from -5°C to 45°C. If needed, you can boost the temperature up to 70°C.
How long does it take for the ThermoTank to reheat?
This depends on how much hot water is used, but on average, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reheat the water to 60 °C after someone takes a bath.
Why should I get a ThermoTank and not a solar geyser?
Solar geysers only work when the sun is shining. On cloudy days or at night, the electric element must heat the water, which makes them less efficient. The ThermoTank operates day or night, rain or shine.
Is it noisy?

The ThermoTank has a rating of 54 decibels which is relatively quiet. To provide some context:

  • 30 dB: Whispering at a distance of 1.5 meters
  • 40 dB: Quiet library or a quiet rural area at night
  • 50 dB: Quiet office environment or a conversation at home
  • 60 dB: Normal conversation or background music in a restaurant
  • 70 dB: Vacuum cleaner at a distance of 3 meters
Will my insurer cover the ThermoTank?
Yes, all major insurance companies have agreed to support the ThermoTank as an alternative to conventional geysers.
Can it be installed outside?
Yes, the ThermoTank is built to stand outside, but some installs have been done inside a room or garage. In this case, the cold air must be deflected away from the machine with ducting.
Can I install it myself?
Yes, but we suggest a qualified plumber or accredited installer to install the unit to make sure the plumbing is done according to South African National Standards (SANS).
How much space do I need?
You’ll need about 1m² plus some space at the back of the tank to connect the pipes.
Does it need to be covered from the elements?
No, unless it is installed directly under a roof or overhang where excessive rainwater can pour directly onto it.
Can it lie flat when transported?
No, it must be transported in a vertical upright position as tilting it more than 30% could damage the heat pump unit.
Can I get a Certificate of Compliance?
Yes, Warrantee and Compliancy Certification (WACC) has issued the ThermoTank with a Certification of compliance. The CoC can be obtained online from www.waccsa.co.za.
What support is offered after installation?

Magneto offers a 3-year warranty, and all spares and components are locally available at its factory.

The company has technical support teams in every province. After the warranty period, support is still available, but the cost of spares and labour will be at your own expense.

Will I need to service my ThermoTank, and how often?
Yes, for the warranty to be maintained, the unit must be serviced and cleaned once a year. Where needed, the antifreeze is also topped up in the tank.
What is the expected lifespan of the ThermoTank?
With proper servicing, Magneto expects ThermoTanks to last between 10 and 15 years.
Can I manage the ThermoTank remotely?
Yes, you can download a free app called “Smart life”, which will give you full control over the ThermoTank, including changing modes, timers and temperatures.
