Spring maintenance for the home

Tips for spring home maintenance

It is time to give our homes some much needed attention after the harsh cold of winter. Spring symbolises renewal and presents the perfect opportunity to refresh the home and prevent any further damage. Maintaining your home will help you avoid unexpected costs and repairs and can also benefit you when it comes to claiming for damage brought on by weather conditions.

According to the Ombudsman for Short Term Insurance, homeowner insurance complaints are mostly resolved in favour of the insurance company, particularly when it come to acts of nature, such as storm-related damage. This is because insurance policies expect you to keep your home in good condition and will not cover wear and tear or damage caused by defective design, construction or workmanship.

In this article we will look at the key areas you need to focus on to get your home back in great condition for the hot months ahead.

Roof and Gutters

Your roof protects your home against all weather conditions and so it is important to inspect them seasonally.  Gutters play the role of collecting rainwater from the roof and diverting it away from your home.  During the winter season when trees continue to shed due to strong winds and the bitter cold, the leaves can block your gutters or becoming the breeding ground for pests and vermin.

The best place to start is to check your roof for any signs of damage or leakage and clean out and secure your gutters with the help of these tips.

Windows and Doors

The freezing conditions can be damaging to your doors and windows, especially if they are made of wood. And if your region gets rain during the warmer months, it’s worth noting that moisture build up can either cause mould or water damage such as shrinking or warping. A good sealant and a fresh coat of paint can do wonders for the look and longevity of windows and doors.

The garage door is another area that needs inspection to make sure it is working properly. Clean off dust or dirt that might be trapped on the door and in the mechanisms.

Outdoor surfaces and walkways

Your outside concrete or paving can quickly age after continuous freezing and melting in winter, so it is important to inspect around the home and look for possible cracks or peeling. This inspection will help you recognise where you need to patch up your surfaces before the damage gets worse. A good pressure wash can also clear out any debris or dullness to your outside surfaces, especially around the walkway or driveway. Certain types of flooring age quickly, so also consider polish or paint to breathe new life into them.

Air conditioners

Prepare your air conditioners and get them ready to deal with hot sweltering summers by replacing any air filters and cleaning out the air vents. Also check the airducts inside your home for mould, debris or any blockage. Making sure that your aircons are properly serviced by a professional will also prolong their life.

Hosepipes and sprinklers

Before the heat settles in, it is important to check equipment you will use in summer such as hosepipe and sprinklers, which are exposed to outside conditions during winter. Check for leaks or blockages and any damage that might cost you on your water bill in the long run. While you’re at it, it’s also worthwhile to check all your taps and pipes especially the ones outside for issues.

Spruce up your garden

There is no better time than spring to work on your garden and prepare new plant beds for flowering and harvesting later. Some of your plants and trees might require pruning or trimming and don’t forget to attack those weeds to get your garden looking great. Prepare the soil for more planting and let out your creative side and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Prioritise safety during home maintenance

If you decide to do the maintenance tasks yourself, it is important to prioritise safety.  Always use gloves, safety shoes, goggles, a sturdy ladder and any other equipment that will help you to do the maintenance safely and effectively, especially for areas that can be dangerous such as on the roof or close to electrical components. Make sure you open the windows and doors and use a mask when working with toxic chemicals such as paint or detergents.

As the weather gets hotter, our activities gravitate towards spending time outdoors. We can relax with family and enjoy the sunshine knowing that there won’t be unexpected repairs or costs that will creep in. By maintaining these crucial areas during spring, you can get your home looking fresh and ready for summer.
