Municipal water backup for your home

Why you should consider a municipal water backup tank

Regular water supply in South Africa has become an issue in many households as infrastructure problems and ongoing loadshedding affect the supply of water to our homes. A municipal water backup system is one of the best options for households looking to secure their water supply.

According to earth.org, South Africa experiences between 25-30% of water loss due to leaks that are present in the country’s water piping system. And South Africa’s hot and dry conditions mean water shortages are a continual concern.

What is a municipal water backup system?

A municipal backup system is a fully automated system which gives you access to stored water when the main water supply is cut off. A water tank is connected to your municipal water supply and then piped into the main areas of the home. When your municipal water supply is reduced or experiences an outage, your home then uses the water stored in the tank. Once the water supply from the municipality is restored, the tank is refilled.

A municipal backup tank and pump installation requires an expert installer who will ensure that the tank is safely connected to the municipal supply, pump and your home.

When purchasing your water tank, remember to choose one made of quality virgin linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) material. This material is known for its lifespan and keeps your water cleaner and fresher for longer.

How is it installed?

The installation typically includes connectors, valves, pressure pumps, and an appropriate slab if a sturdy, flat surface is not available on the property.

A municipal water storage backup system has more components than a basic water tank, but once installed it is fully automated. It requires the installation of a pressure controller that will detect when the pressure drops and start pumping water into the tank and a float valve, which will help to control how much water is filled into your tank. Adding some proper piping and valves will safeguard against pressurised water going back into the municipal supply.

It is important to monitor and check regularly if the water in your tank is still in good condition. Another way to keep fresh water in your water tank is having the installer design the system to rotate the water periodically or through a passive flow through the tank.

One of the great things about this type of water storage system is that you can keep the water for long periods of time as it is fit for drinking. If you’re unsure, however, there is an option to install a filter under the sink or countertop.

With South Africa’s climate and infrastructure problems, water outages can last anything between a day and a whole week. A municipal water backup system will guarantee uninterrupted access to water supply for you and your family.
