Solar panels can power most household appliances, including lights, refrigerators, computers, washing machines and TVs.
Electricity-intensive appliances such as geysers, stoves, air conditioners and pool pumps may require larger solar installations.
Our expert Energy Advisors will help you choose the best system size based on which appliances you would like to run during power outages.
It depends on the size of your solar installation and your electricity consumption.
While it's possible to power an entire home, most people choose to maintain their connection with Eskom’s grid for additional electricity at night and during periods of cloudy weather.
The size of your system depends on factors such as your family’s electricity needs and budget, the amount of sunlight your property receives and your roof’s orientation and inclination.
LookSee’s end-to-end solar journey starts with an online quote that recommends system sizes based on your current electricity bills. From there we work with your family to understand your specific needs and find the best system setup for your budget.
You can also implement electricity-saving practices and consider using timers or smart home technology to control your consumption.
There are 3 types of solar setups:
- Grid-tied: The system is made up of solar panels and an inverter but does not include battery storage. You can only draw power from your system while the sun is shining. Your house remains connected to the grid.
- Hybrid: The system includes batteries, which means you’ll be able to use your stored power during power outages, at night or during periods of cloudy weather. Your house remains connected to the grid.
- Off-grid: A very large system that has enough generation ability and battery storage capacity to cover all your family’s electricity requirements and allows your home to be disconnected from power grid permanently.
These solutions allow you to select a configuration that will fit your immediate needs and budget, with options to upgrade or extend at a later stage.
Solar panels typically last over 20 years, inverters may need replacement every 10 to 15 years and batteries can last between 12 months and 10 years, depending on the technology and usage. Our solutions include batteries with a warranty of 10 years*.
Regular maintenance and avoiding component overload can help extend the system’s lifespan.

It depends on the type and size of your inverter. Some off-the-shelf inverters are solar-ready, but most are not.
If your inverter is not solar-ready, you’ll need a solar conversion kit or a solar charge controller. You’ll also need to check the size of the inverter to make sure it matches the power requirements of your system.
