Keeping the arts alive

Keep the arts alive with these tips

South Africa's musician, acting, artistic, entertainment and supporting communities have been particularly devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic, left largely unable to put on the performances and shows that earn them a living. What's more, few have been eligible to receive government relief packages.

Many of our artists have had to turn to charitable initiatives for their survival, while some have had no choice but to abandon their passions to find alternative income to put food on the table.

Whichever art form moves you, here is how you can support your local artists no matter your budget.

Music

Did you know that musicians and DJ's get most of their income from shows and performances? South Africa's various lockdown measures have resulted in large numbers of public and corporate gigs being cancelled or audiences being limited to facilitate social distancing.

  • Dead broke?
Now is the time to promote your favourite local artists. Use social media to share music videos, reviews and repost announcements of upcoming events. Send requests for local artists to your radio station or tune into smaller community stations that play more local music.
  • A little cash to spend?
Have a night out at your local music venue and enjoy the more intimate feel that comes with smaller audiences. If you're not in the mood to go out, turn to an online concert to bring the party to you. Don't forget to head to your music store to purchase that new song you really love, or the classic that's missing from your library.
  • Received a bonus?
Hire a musician to do a live online show for you and your friends and family. You'll even be able to request your favourite songs for your virtual party.

Movies, TV and theatre

Our actors and actresses have also seen shows cancelled, filming put on hold, castings reduced, and programme schedules being pushed out.

  • Dead broke?
Improve ratings and demand by watching local productions when you get a chance. Share reviews and promos of your favourite local comedians, series or movies on social media and with friends and family to create interest.
  • A little cash to spend?
Keep local productions alive by choosing a local production at the movies or purchasing some of your favourite South African movies, series and even soundtracks.
  • Received a bonus?
Organise an outing for colleagues, friends and family to the ballet, theatre or a comedy show for an excellent night's entertainment.

Creative arts

With galleries unable to host many exhibitions and lockdown measures limiting the opening of markets and the number of shoppers, creative artists have had little opportunity to display and sell their art.

  • Dead broke?
Help your favourite artists and designers get attention by telling friends, family, neighbours and colleagues about their work. Use social media to post images of your favourite pieces (don't forget to link to the artist), and while you're at it, share the artist's posts too.
  • A little cash to spend?
Keep an eye out for smaller pieces of art or decorative pieces that you can fit into your budget. Pop into markets, craft shows and local home industry stores for inspiration.
  • Received a bonus?
Now is the time to invest in that work of art that will become a feature in your home or garden. And with the economy so tight, you're likely to get great value for your money.
